BMW M2, M3 and M4 Track-Day Preparation Checklist
A workshop-style checklist for preparing an F87, F80, F82, G87, G80 or G82 BMW for a track day, covering fluid condition, pad and disc inspection, wheel torque, tyre pressures, heat management and post-event checks.
The objective: finish every session with a healthy car
A successful first track day is not defined by lap time. It is defined by consistent braking, stable pressures, no warnings, no leaks and a car that can be driven home safely. Preparation should create margin rather than merely pass a visual inspection.
Preparation timeline

Pre-event mechanical inspection

Brake pad thickness
There is no universal safe starting thickness because energy input varies enormously. A novice in an OG M2 on road tyres may use little material; an experienced driver in a G80 on semi-slicks can consume pads quickly. Treat 8–10 mm as a sensible planning floor for a first event, not an official BMW limit. Dedicated track pads should be replaced before the friction material becomes too thin to control heat or protect the pistons and seals.
Disc minimum thickness
Use the MIN TH value cast, etched or stamped on the disc and confirm it through current BMW information. Do not assume every BMW disc can lose the same amount. Measure with a micrometer at several positions around the swept area, avoiding the unworn outer lip.
- F97/F98 X3 M/X4 M front 395 × 36 mm discs: BMW publishes a 34.4 mm minimum.
- F97/F98 rear 370 × 24 mm discs: BMW publishes a 22.4 mm minimum.
- For other systems, record the stamped figure from the actual disc rather than copying an internet table.
Wheel torque
For standard BMW wheel bolts and original wheel hardware, 140 Nm is the common owner-manual figure across the cited M applications. Torque the wheels when cold using a calibrated torque wrench and the correct sequence. Do not grease the bolt threads or seats unless a specific fastener manufacturer instructs it.
For stud conversions, use the stud/nut manufacturer’s value. A rose nut, steel nut and aluminium motorsport nut can require different procedures even on the same hub.
Tyre pressure strategy
There is no single correct track pressure. Start from the vehicle’s cold placard or a conservative tyre-manufacturer recommendation, then adjust using hot pressure, tread behaviour and handling.
- Record cold pressures before leaving the paddock.
- Complete several progressive laps rather than attacking immediately.
- Measure hot pressures as soon as safely parked.
- Bleed only in small steps and record every change.
- Do not drive home on the reduced hot-session setting. Restore suitable cold road pressures once the tyres have cooled.
Heat management
- Use a warm-up lap for tyres, brakes, engine oil and driver concentration.
- Avoid holding the car stationary with the brake pedal after a very hot lap because pad material can imprint onto the disc.
- Complete a cool-down lap with reduced braking and airflow through the car.
- Park in gear or Park on level ground and avoid applying the parking brake while the rear brakes are extremely hot.
- Open the bonnet only where the organiser permits it and never remove a hot coolant cap.
- Monitor repeated increases in pedal travel, vibration, smoke, smell or warning messages. Stop and inspect rather than completing “one more lap”.
Between-session inspection
- Look through both front wheels and compare inner/outer pad wear.
- Check for fluid around bleed nipples, hoses and caliper joints.
- Inspect tyre shoulders and sidewalls; record hot pressures.
- Look for fresh disc cracks, scoring or pad deposits.
- Check oil level and warning history using the vehicle display.
- Re-torque only when appropriate and never repeatedly tighten hot fasteners without a defined procedure.
Post-track inspection
Once the car has cooled, repeat the brake, tyre and fluid inspection. Measure remaining pad material and log the wear per session. Check wheel balance weights, arch liners, undertrays and brake ducts. If pedal feel changed, bleed the system and inspect for heat damage before further hard use.
Track-day packing list
- Torque wrench and correct socket
- Accurate pressure gauge and inflator
- Spare brake fluid from a sealed container
- Pad-thickness gauge or vernier caliper
- Basic tools, gloves, wipes and torch
- Engine oil with the correct BMW approval
- Spare pads where appropriate
