Bilstein Suspension FAQs

Find quick answers to the questions we get asked most often.

What is the difference between Bilstein B4, B6 and B8?

Bilstein B4 is primarily an OE-style replacement shock absorber intended to restore the vehicle’s original suspension performance.

Bilstein B6 is an uprated performance damper designed for vehicles remaining at or close to standard ride height.

Bilstein B8 provides similar performance-focused damping but uses a shortened design intended for compatible lowered applications.

Are Bilstein B4 shock absorbers an upgrade?

Both systems provide adjustable ride height. Bilstein B16 kits also provide adjustable damping on applicable versions, allowing the suspension response to be altered to suit different driving requirements.

B14 is a strong road-focused option where height adjustment is required but separate damping adjustment is unnecessary. B16 provides greater control over the setup for more demanding road and track use.

Can Bilstein B6 shock absorbers be used with lowering springs?

Bilstein B6 dampers are generally intended for standard-height or factory sports suspension applications. Bilstein B8 is normally the more appropriate option for use with aftermarket lowering springs because of its shortened design.

Always check the exact part-number application before ordering.

What are Bilstein B8 shock absorbers designed for?

Bilstein B8 shock absorbers are designed for vehicles using compatible lowering springs or certain factory lowered suspension systems. The shortened damper design allows the suspension to work correctly within the reduced ride height and available travel.

What is included in a Bilstein B12 suspension kit?

A Bilstein B12 kit is a matched spring and damper package. Depending on the application, it normally combines performance shock absorbers with vehicle-specific performance springs to provide a fixed ride height and coordinated suspension setup.

The exact contents and quoted lowering amount must be checked against the individual product listing.

What is the difference between Bilstein B12 and B14?

Bilstein B12 is a fixed-height suspension package using matched springs and dampers.

Bilstein B14 is a coilover system that allows the ride height to be adjusted within an approved range. B14 damping is application-specific and is not normally externally adjustable.

Choose B12 for a straightforward matched suspension upgrade or B14 when adjustable ride height is important.

What is Bilstein DampTronic?

Bilstein DampTronic products are designed for selected vehicles equipped with factory electronic or adaptive damping. Compatible systems can integrate with the vehicle’s original electronic suspension controls.

DampTronic availability is vehicle-specific. A standard passive damper should not be assumed to be compatible with a car fitted with adaptive suspension.

Will Bilstein coilovers make my car uncomfortable?

Any performance coilover can feel firmer than worn or comfort-focused factory suspension. The final ride quality depends on the Bilstein model, vehicle, chosen ride height, damper settings, wheel size, tyre construction and suspension condition.

Avoid lowering the car beyond the sensible operating range and ensure the installation and alignment are completed correctly.
