BMW Engine Oil Capacity and Service Parts Guide: S55, S58, B58, N55 and S65
A workshop reference for common BMW performance engines, including approximate oil-service capacities, BMW oil approvals, oil-filter part numbers and the parts that should be considered during routine servicing.
Engine service reference
| Engine | Common performance applications | Service-fill quantity | Oil specification guidance | Common BMW oil-filter number | Common service parts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| N55 | F20/F21 M135i; F22 M235i; F87 original M2 and other applications | Approximately 6.5 L with filter on the cited BMW service chart | BMW approval varies by model year/market; LL-01 or LL-01 FE families are common. Use VIN-specific manual. | 11427854445 for the F87 N55 application; earlier N55 applications can use a different filter, so verify VIN. | Filter kit, sump-plug sealing washer/plug as required, approved oil, air filter, spark plugs when due. |
| S55 | F80 M3; F82/F83 M4; F87 M2 Competition/CS | Approximately 6.5 L with filter | BMW service literature lists LL-01/LL-01 FE oil families depending year and market. Viscosity alone is not an approval. | 11427854445 | Oil filter, sump-plug seal/plug, air filters, spark plugs, cabin filter; inspect charge-air and oil-cooler system. |
| B58 | M140i, M240i, 340i/440i, M340i, G42 M240i and others | Approximately 6.5 L with filter for common applications | Early BMW literature includes LL-14 FE+ 0W-20; later UK vehicles can require other BMW Longlife approvals. Read the oil-cap label and owner manual. | 11427826799 supersedes 11428583898 on many applications; later supersessions may apply | Oil filter, correct sump-plug service parts, air filter, spark plugs, microfilter; inspect coolant circuits and filter housing. |
| S58 | F97/F98 X3 M/X4 M; G80/G81 M3; G82/G83 M4; G87 M2 | Approximately 7.0 L with filter for common G8X applications | Market-specific manuals differ: UK documentation can list LL-12 FE or LL-19 FE 0W-30, while other markets may list LL-01 FE. VIN/manual controls. | 11428092620 | Oil filter, sump-plug seal/plug, twin air filters where fitted, spark plugs, microfilter; inspect oil cooler and underbody protection. |
| S65 | E90/E92/E93 M3 | 8.8 L with filter; 8.4 L without filter | BMW M 10W-60 is the established factory specification for S65 in BMW service literature. | 11427837997 | Oil filter and O-rings, two drain-plug sealing components as applicable, 10W-60 oil, air filter, spark plugs, rod-bearing history review. |
Why BMW oil approval matters more than viscosity
“0W-30” or “5W-30” describes viscosity behaviour; it does not prove the oil meets BMW’s chemical, durability, emissions-system and fuel-economy requirements. Two oils with the same viscosity can carry different BMW Longlife approvals.
Use the approval shown in the VIN-specific owner manual or current BMW workshop data. This is especially important for B58 and S58 vehicles because requirements vary by production date, emissions equipment and market.
N55 service notes
- The common BMW service chart lists 6.5 litres for the cited F-series N55 applications.
- Early E-series N55 engines can use a different filter element from later F-series cars. Do not apply the F87 filter number to every N55.
- Inspect the oil-filter housing, oil cooler connections, charge pipe and coolant system for leaks.
- After filling, use the electronic measurement procedure on level ground with the engine at the required temperature.
S55 service notes
- S55 service fill is commonly 6.5 litres with filter in BMW service charts.
- The BMW filter 11427854445 is listed for F80, F82/F83 and F87 S55 applications.
- Track-driven cars should have service intervals based on use, fuel dilution and oil analysis rather than waiting blindly for the maximum CBS interval.
- Inspect the oil cooler and low-mounted pipework after kerb or underbody contact.
B58 service notes
- Common B58 applications use approximately 6.5 litres with filter.
- 11427826799 is a commonly listed later filter number replacing 11428583898; BMW has issued further supersessions, so order by VIN.
- The filter cartridge can be damaged during removal if it has degraded or stuck in the housing. Remove it carefully and inspect for missing material.
- B58 oil approval varies substantially by year and region. Do not default every B58 to one viscosity or Longlife approval.
S58 service notes
- Common G8X applications use approximately 7.0 litres with filter.
- The S58 oil system has a front and rear sump arrangement. BMW’s technical training notes that the service procedure allows oil in the smaller front sump to drain to the rear sump.
- Use filter 11428092620 where confirmed by VIN.
- BMW specifies a running-in oil service for S58 M models. Continue to follow the model-specific running-in and service schedule.
S65 service notes
- BMW TIS lists 8.8 litres with filter and 8.4 litres without filter.
- Use BMW M 10W-60 or an oil carrying the appropriate BMW M approval for the vehicle.
- The system uses electronic oil-level measurement. Follow the exact warm-up and measurement sequence.
- Service planning should consider the vehicle’s rod-bearing history, throttle actuators, idle-control system, oil leaks and age-related hoses, without treating every car as automatically faulty.
Recommended service workflow
- Confirm VIN, engine code and required oil approval.
- Warm the engine appropriately, inspect for leaks and remove undertrays carefully.
- Drain into a clean vessel and inspect the oil and filter for contamination or metallic debris.
- Replace every required seal and one-time-use plug specified by BMW.
- Lubricate filter O-rings with clean engine oil and fit them in the correct grooves.
- Torque the filter housing and drain plug to the current vehicle-specific instruction.
- Add less than the nominal capacity initially, run the engine, check for leaks and complete the electronic level measurement.
- Reset the service indicator only after the physical service has been completed and recorded.
